“My Anchor in the Storm”

Changing Lives through Dancing by David Woodbury

After so many years with Arthur Murray, 48 in October, I can truly say that Ballroom Dancing and my life at Arthur Murray has been an anchor in my life.

Ballroom dancing at Arthur Murray can also be an anchor in your own life. With the world in such a stressful time right now, dancing can easily be a place of refuge and a source of joy in your life.

Arthur Murray was pivotal in my teens and twenties offering me a wonderful path to a glorious career surrounded by great leaders and mentors. The first two decades of life with Arthur Murray were amazing.

When life sent me challenges, Arthur Murray was there for me. When my mother passed, my studio and students gave me life and consolation. I remember being in a big dance competition the weekend after her services. I danced all my entries knowing that she wanted me to, and she wanted me to go on. I’ll never forget the love and support.

When my life partner of 16 years died, I was inconsolable. Returning to my school, the love, understanding, support saved me. When daddy died right after that, I’ll always be thankful for my attendance at our World Superama Competition, and all the love shown to me from friends from around the Arthur Murray world. I was asked to carry the American flag in the Parade of Nations at the grand ball, and I remember tears flowing from my eyes knowing that daddy knew I was honoring our country.

Through thick and thin, Arthur Murray has been a solid anchor in my life. Looking back these past four years, we did not feel alone when the lockdowns robbed us of our thriving business and sent us into an unknown world. There were studios in the country for various reasons did not close at all, and then many that shut down completely. We were surrounded by great minds as we immediately went to Zoom and stayed afloat.

We were surrounded by our studio families and we all inspired each other.
