I Love the Holidays!

We put up our Christmas tree Thanksgiving Day. Sent out our cards the next day. We knew that we would dance almost every day from then to Christmas Eve. Guess what? The days have been glorious. We have danced at many Arthur Murray Balls with hundreds of guest in attendance. We have participated in competitions, shows, graduations, dinners, celebrations and even our staff Marathon Day and staff party.

Our school has just won first place in our division for the international Tournament of Champions. Many months of preparation, many weeks of great lessons, groups, parties and events. We came out first place thanks to our great staff and wonderful students.

As for music, I have listened to hours and hours of Christmas music. I discovered the YouTube Christmas channels and my heart is in a constant state of singing. Music is life to me and these holidays have been full of all the classics, and even some new tunes! My mom, J. Clair, always said “Keep a little song in your heart!”

As for dancing, a lot of people have a very hard time during the holidays. With Arthur Murray I have the privilege of dancing through the entire season. It is an elixir to the blues, depression, loneliness, heartache, and stress. Now for 42 years I have danced through to the year’s end with great joy and happiness. I am the luckiest guy on the planet!

As for presents, Joel and I have a tradition. We serve at Christmas instead of giving presents. That means we are Hospitality Ministers at St. Monica Parish in Santa Monica. This year, because it is Sunday, we have 11 masses on the 24th. We will be serving the 7:30 AM, then return for the 6, 8, and 10 PM masses. It is glorious. We are Team Leaders for two of the four we are serving. We help organize our teams and say “Merry Christmas” hundreds of time to many, many smiling faces. We walk to and from mass and it is a magical experience from beginning to end.

It’s almost that special day of Christmas, and I have been happy the whole season. No time for the blues or feeling down. Just enough time to get to the next event, rest and eat a bit in front of the Christmas tree with Joel and the kitties, and lots and lots of dancing to make the holidays merry and bright. In my “spare” time, I am preparing for 2018 and planning a dream year of success for the upcoming year.

Love the holidays. Volunteer somewhere. Send some unexpected thank you notes. Visit an ill neighbor. Call someone you have not spoken to in a while. Take a friend some food. Reach out and the joy you will receive back will put you over the top.

Thanks for reading!

When’s Christmas and Hanukkah?

Christmas is in 70 days and Hanukkah is in 64 days. I send out my Christmas cards November 28th and my Christmas tree goes up that weekend. I’m working weekly on my cards (which I make) and my mailing list. Time to purchase the gifts I send to those far away, and start planning the kitties’ stockings. The holidays are almost here!

2014-10-15 21.00.22

Why in the world am I writing about this now? Because 2015 will be here before we know it and January is one of the biggest months in our Arthur Murray calendar! We begin ‘Dancing With Our Stars’ benefit in January at St. Monica’s and January is also our biggest guest promotion month of the new year.

2014-10-15 21.00.35

Another reason is that I am passionate for the holidays is the music of the seasons. I love the familiar tunes and the classic music that I grew up with. I love the decorations at Disneyland and the “snow” that falls each night on Disney’s Main Street. I love sending out cards and messages to so many that I love and miss, and receiving cards from so many friends.

2014-10-15 21.00.48

I especially love the Arthur Murray calendar at this time of year. We have the Tournament of Champions, six weeks of great parties and activities. November is Graduation Medal Ball, December is the event of the year “Holiday Ball” and our new “Mistletoe Ball”.

Sometimes the holidays are rough on us, but dancing with Arthur Murray makes the holidays a joy and a pleasure to experience. Then, January is a fantastic month to kick start the new year! Yes, Arthur Murray is the place to be October through December and into the New Year!

I don’t want to get to the end of my life and find that I just lived
the length of it. I want to live the width of it as well.– Diane Ackerman

One of the many things I love about Arthur Murray is having some many things to look forward to! As the above quote says, I want to ‘do it all’ in my life. After 38 years of the Arthur Murray professional life (October 15, 1976), I still feel as if there is much, much more for me to experience and do. There will never be enough years of dancing for me!

Remember, the magnitude of your life is directly proportional to the magnitude of your thoughts – Dodinsky

you do it will bring others to watch you do it again and again.– Mark Victor Hansen

My goal is to have the friendliest, happiest, most active, and most hospitable Arthur Murray school in the world! This can only be achieved by living the dream. Being a good planner and being a master at follow through!

The greatest gift you will ever receive is the gift of loving and
believing in yourself. Guard this gift with your life. It is the only
thing that will ever truly be yours.– Tiffany Loren Rowe

Enjoy the holidays. Come dance with us and dance away the blues and dance in the joy. Laugh, feel good, and become that happy person that lives life in joy and eager anticipation of the coming day

Love you all,

Getting Ready to Dance in the Fall and Winter!

Wow, I’m planning out 2015. Those of you who know me are chuckling. Fall and Winter is just around the corner. The fall dance calendar is full of exciting events! We are planning our Tournament of Champions in August and getting ready to dance into 2015!

Someday, in years to come, you will be wrestling with the great
temptation, or trembling under the great sorrow of your life. But the
real struggle is here, now, in these quiet weeks. Now it is being
decided whether, in the day of your supreme sorrow or temptation, you
shall miserably fail or gloriously conquer. Character cannot be made
except by a steady, long continued process.
— Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) American Bishop

Miss Vicki Venka, my favorite coach!

We were just asked to submit our Hospitality Service schedule at St. Monica’s through January 2015. It was amazing to me to see that our dance calendar is full until March next year. What a joy and thrill that we have the opportunity to dance, perform, compete, train, and share the magic of dance together.

Trials, temptations, disappointments — all these are helps instead
of hindrances, if one uses them rightly. They not only test the fiber
of a character, but strengthen it. Every conquered temptation
represents a new fund of moral energy. Every trial endured and
weathered in the right spirit makes a soul nobler and stronger than
it was before.– James Buckham

Georgetta Platt, Amazing and Wonderful friend!

Do you want to get motivated? Go to your PC and print out calendars for August 2014 through December 2015.
Then, write out some goals of what you want to do with your life. Write in goal dates of when you want to take your first dance lesson, perform your first routine, and compete in your first competition. Plan your weight and exercise goals. Do you want to travel, learn a language, run for office, get a promotion, have a needed surgery, get a new job, start school or graduate, or fulfill an lifetime dream? Write it down, make a plan, then inch-by-inch it will be a cinch!

Aim at the sun and you may not reach it; but your arrow will fly far
higher than if you had aimed at an object on a level with yourself.

Steve Platt, our Area 7 Director!

Do not falter or shrink; But just think out your work, And just work
out your think.
— Nixon Waterman

Last weekend I had the honor of judging Unique Dance-O-Rama in Irvine. The organizers, Steve and Georgetta Platt, put on the largest event in Arthur Murray History, perhaps the largest competition in the US to date! It was an amazing few days. Friday and Saturday, the competition began at 7 AM and finished around 1:30 AM with the ballroom always full and hundreds of dancers at their best taking the floor to compete! I left with such great hope for the young generation of today after seeing the young couples trying to win their heats. The gentlemen were so beautifully dressed with perfect decorum and poise, and the ladies had grace and beauty and elegant charm as they glided across the floor.

To see such a return to elegance truly blessed my soul. There is hope for today, and a lot of it comes through the discipline and reward of ballroom dancing which is stronger today than ever. Write on your calendar that you are going to call your Arthur Murray Dance Center and start on you new dancing journey. You’ll be glad you did!

We each have all the time there is; our mental and moral status is
determined by what we do with it.– Mary Blake
