“The A,B,C’s of Ballroom Dancing”

Changing Lives through Dancing by David Woodbury

Arthur Murray Santa Monica

Now you are a Ballroom Dancer! Congratulations. Just like driving, you might be a life-long driver, or sitting behind the steering wheel for the first time with your brand-new driver’s license. You are considered a driver!

The moment you step on the floor, whether your first lesson or you 500th lesson, you are a ballroom dancer.

Read these three ABC’s. They will help all dancers enjoy their experience on the dancefloor.

A

ANTICIPATION

I love taking a partner in my arms and moving to the music. It is always a thrill and a bit of magic to be able to hear what’s playing, quickly recognizing the dance. Remembering my sequence of steps and moving as one with my partner. The skill of floorcraft is so much fun. The dynamics of the moving dancers changes moment by moment.

B

BELIEF

Lack of faith and self-confidence keeps a lot of folks off of the dance floor. These phrases go through a lot of minds “I have no rhythm” “I know I can’t dance” “I don’t want to embarrass myself in front of others” “No one will dance with me” “I’m not good enough”.

We’ll the fact is this, if you can get yourself to the dance school, you can dance. If you can walk through the front door, you can dance. If you can smile at someone and take their hand, you can dance.

Our whole body is made of natural rhythms, the beating of the heart, the breathing of the lungs, the blinking of the eyes. You are born with rhythm.

The truth about taking dance lessons is that everyone is so consumed with their own dancing that no one is even going to watch you on their own lessons. No one has time to judge you. No worries!

Even if someone does see you, they will remember when they were new dancers and they will offer you the support and encouragement that was given to them. Believing is living, so have faith in yourself, or just find a wonderful teacher and a great school where all will believe in you! Arthur Murray is the place to be.

CONQUER

This is what I think. I’ve survived a lot in my 48 years with Arthur Murray and 68 years of life. Others judging me does not stop me. Sometimes it may sting when others criticize. I have now learned to conquer my fears and move forward.

If you are a guy, you might be afraid of what other guys will say about your dancing. Here is what you tell them. Hey guys, I go to a beautiful Arthur Murray Dance Center. They have a lot of fantastic female instructors. My teacher is terrific and I’m dancing a spotlight with her next Friday. Come as my guest. At the parties, I never sit down for all the ladies want to dance with me all night.

Ladies, say, I am dancing with my teacher at Arthur Murray for a Spotlight Show. Come watch us dance. He is a champion dancer and we are going to a competition in a couple of months. At the party, I dance with all the instructors and I love dancing with all the students. Give it a try.

Once you get your dancing going, what seemed something you had to conquer, is something that others envy about you and want to start in their own lives. Just go where your heart tells you and move forward. You’ll be surprised how many will follow you, literally!

I lingered on the conquer section. I seem to have had to fight all my life for what I have and to prove myself. The result is that I have a lot of confidence in my dancing. I love people and love sharing dancing with others.

Now, remember your ABC’s.

Anticipate something fabulous.

Believe in reaching for the Moon and the Stars.

Conquer all fears through your dancing!

See you on the dance floor!

Thanks for reading.
