Changing Lives through Dancing by David Woodbury
Arthur Murray Dance Studio Santa Monica
Estée Lauder, entrepreneur and founder of the famous cosmetics brand, on the power of focus:
“I’ve always believed that if you stick to a thought and carefully void distraction along the way, you can fulfill a dream. My whole life has been about fulfilling dreams. I kept my eye on the target, whatever that target was. Whether your target is big or small, grand or simple, ambitious or personal, I’ve always believed that success comes from not letting your eyes stray from that target. Anyone who wants to achieve a dream must stay strong, focused and steady.”
In my 49th year, going on 50 years with Arthur Murray Dance Studios, I had a host of mentors who showed me what a great life dream I could have. They had faith in me and mentored me, and even now lead and guide me. My whole career has been a wonderful dream and I continue to dream of the future.
My original goal was to stay with Arthur Murray for 2 years, then after 4 years I took my full judges test and was on my dancing path. My “eyes on my target” has been and continue to be to give great service to others. For years my goal was to be #1 and have massive success. I realized that having it all does not bring satisfaction to the soul. Now, I have plenty (too much), and I want to grow from giving the “Cadillac Treatment” to all I meet. That equals, giving my best from the heart to all at all times.
So where is my target in life now? Have a laugh with others. Share a smile. Make someone’s day better and bring joy into their lives. Recognize their dreams and help them to achieve those dreams. My target is not having more money, a better house, a new car, it’s about having a meaningful lifestyle, family, friends and a strong home life full of companionship and love.
For me, having it all means having it all to give. For the rest of my life, I wish to give back and share my wisdom and knowledge with others. I have learned from major earthquakes, devastating fires, and sudden health challenges, and the loss of some of the closest friends in my life, that life can change on a dime.
When we hit with the challenges of life, we will be asked “what is our target”. Where are our “riches”? Where is our strength, our true focus?
Thank you, Estée Lauder, for your amazing life and for sharing your focus with us!
Thank you for reading and Keep on Dancing!
