Until one is Committed!

“Until one is committed, there is always hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one element of truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans – that moment one commits oneself, then providence moves all.”

– Johann von Goethe (1749 – 1832)

German Poet and Dramatist

In my laptop is a book that I’m finishing “Closing the Back Door – Making Life’s Ultimate Commitments!” The book is about making a decision and sticking with it to the end and not giving up. As I was writing it, I lost both parents and ultimately my life partner to cancer. The book was left for a while because some of my life commitments had been taken away from me. I had to rethink a closed back door that did not exist.

Now, I realize that times will change and modify our goals, yet we may stay focused and keep our goals and dreams in life.

“If you wish success in life, make perseverance your bosom friend, experience your wise counselor, caution your elder brother and hope your guardian genius.”

– Joseph Addison

(1672-1719) English Writer and Statesman

These words are nuggets of gold. Perseverance, experience, caution, and hope.  A friend came up to me a last weekend’s dance competition, with tears in her eyes and she hugged me and said that I never give up and how that has inspired her. This moment stuck with me and was deeply moving. It is easy to throw in the towel, to walk away, to give up, but the rewards of sticking with it are powerful and long lasting.

“An optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity; A pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity.”

– Sir Winston Churchill (1874 – 1965)

British Politician

Calamities, I’ve had a few. Water over our ballroom dance floor, illness, the passing of friends and families, and changes that I could not control. Now, I know that something good will come out of all these situations.  Years ago, one of my mentors, Miss Pat Traymore, was in my car driving from LAX and I missed an exit. I was very upset and embarrassed and this is what she said to me. It was meant to me. That I was being protected from something bad happening to me. My mom, J. Clair always said the same thing. She said that the way things turned out was Gods way of protecting us from some unforeseen calamity that we could not envision. Now, I’m always aware of this when I forget a key, run back into the house, or I’m late. I know that I’m truly being protected.

“The past cannot be changed. The future is still in your power.”

– Hugh Lawson White (1773 – 1840)

American Politician

In the 80’s, my dance partner did a reading for me. I usually do not participate in this practice but I did receive this reading just this once. She saw many upcoming things in my life and before she gave me her reading, I asked her, am I in charge of my destiny and she said yes. She can I could control my future by the actions I was taking today. Ultimately, many of the predictions she saw came true, but my positive attitude and my heart of faith truly shaped and helped destine my future.

Last thought for commitments: Let go of fear. It’s just like driving your car with one foot on the gas pedal and one heavy foot on the break, all at the same time. Letting go of fear is a daily routine and a daily habit. Try it, you’ll like the new you and like living a life without fear.

Thanks for reading!

Freedom; Justice; Honor; Duty; Mercy; Hope 7-22-16

“All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom; justice; honor; duty; mercy; hope.”- Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) British Politician

I found out that I’m a bit old fashioned. I arrive at the Arthur Murray Dance Center of Santa Monica every day with a new sense of hope and knowing that each day is a fresh and exciting opportunity for growth and success. I’m filled with light and look forward to the promise of doing my best in every area of my life. I have passion, vision, and feel it is an honor to be dancing for so many years with Arthur Murray.

Someone told me I was “the exception” to today’s world. They said I was not like the normal crowd. I listened with wide eyes and a sinking heart. Their words surprised me. This is why. I was always told “Surround yourself with people you want to become like” in every way. And as of today, my immediate circle of mentors are the great people, the visionaries, the leaders, the trainers, the givers and organizers. The dreamers and the people who are passionate about life and they have a white hot passion for what they do. That is my circle of life.

Not in my past 41 years of dancing was I ever told that I could not do something. Yes, I was told my Tango was bad and I did a bad Swing, but I fixed those problems.  I have been corrected in many ways over the years, but was never taught that failure was an option. My heroes in life have always guided me and directed me to success in every area of the dance world.

“To fulfill a dream, to be allowed to sweat over lonely labor, to be given a chance to create, is the meat and potatoes of life. The money is the gravy.” – Bette Davis (1908 – 1989) American Actress

To be given the freedom and the opportunity of having career where I get to be creative every day, grow as a leader and as a teacher, be a mentor to others, share knowledge with others, these have all been my bread and butter in my career.  Imagine that my job title is to inspire others and to always think on how to be better and more creative. On top of that, I am surrounded with likeminded friends who collaborate and we create the “Master Mind” that we use for ultimate success!

“Man has never made any material as resilient as the human spirit.” – Bernard Williams (1929 – 2003) English Philosopher

“You see things; and you say, ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say ‘Why not?'”– George Bernard Shaw (1856 – 1950) Irish Playwright

Many times in my life, including now, I am dreaming big things that are often hard and require herculean effort. But I have my dad’s constitution and my mother’s emotional power and I am wired for a strong human spirit.

“The three great essentials to achieving anything worthwhile are; first, hard work, second, stick-to-it-iveness, and third, common sense.” – Thomas A. Edison (1847 – 1931) American Inventor

Let’s use these three ingredients and see what happens to make our dreams come true:

Hard work. Show up, do your best, seek to do more, help others!

Stick-to-it-iveness. Don’t give up. Quit complaining. Count your blessings. Keep on!

Common sense. This is my motto: “It will get better”. Make good choices and seek wisdom.

“The only guide to man is his conscience; the only shield to his memory is the rectitude and sincerity of his actions. It is very imprudent to walk through life without this shield, because we are so often mocked by the failure of our hopes and the upsetting of our calculations; but with this shield, however the fates may play, we march always in the ranks of honor. – Tribute to Neville Chamberlain; 1940”

– Sir Winston Churchill (1874 – 1965) British Politician

Well here we are on the other side of the inaugural Sand and Sea Ball 2016! We did it and sold out our first year and the whole event was spectacular. Our small but might core team pulled off a huge and mighty event. My heart is overflowing with gratitude to everyone who attended and all those who participated. We are preparing for Sand and Sea Ball 2017 and know it will be even bigger and better!

My shield of conscience was always with me each day preparing for our event. The late evening after the event was over, I could not sleep. It would not come to me. Then in the morning I realized that I was not awakening with “I need more sponsors” “I have to sell more tickets today”. That had been my purpose for so long that I felt a great empty space in my heart. My conscience had led me to do my best and produce the best show that I could.

My co-chair, Beth Hansler, always help up that mirror in front of me and we always looked at our “best selves” and we never lost hope that we would succeed. I must admit, Beth was the strongest of us and the best keep her dream focused. She was my compass to my true North of success.

Now at the end our one journey, and the new beginnings of many more, what truly matters to me is that we helped change lives through our efforts, and that I made friends for life through the event. What I learned about people and organizing is invaluable. I would not trade a minute of this great experience for I am a changed man today and a better person from the experience.

– Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 – 1945) 32nd President of the United States

Kathryn and David At the End

At the end of the Sand and Sea Ball, during my thank you’s, I said “Dreams can come true”. I had a few dream killers along the way (sometimes that being my own self!) Yet I learned that even those who doubt you will bask in the success in the end and they too will be blessed from all the hard and work and effort. Enjoy the joy of achievement and continue to advance in the direction of your dreams.  You will have a happy day coming your way and a sense of fulfillment that will last a lifetime!

I Think You’re Going to Make It!

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared
to what lies within us.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

2014-03-23 15.59.47

The greatness inside of you is ready to come out. The leader, the mentor, the confident person full of self esteem. That fantastic part of you is ready to take over your life and lead you to greatness. What lies within you is powerful and is ready to emerge and come to the light.

We can often do more for other men by trying to correct our own
faults than by trying to correct theirs.
— Francois Fenelon (1651-1715) French Roman Catholic Theologian

2014-03-30 16.54.14

To “Get to the Top” first we must “first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye”. Matthew 7:5 NIV. I am a solution finder and I always see how things could be done better and more efficiently. Sometimes I see the faults in others before I am first changing my own downfalls and problems in my own life. We can make it, but first we must make the first changed and lead others through example and not criticism (not easy for me to do).

2014-03-23 16.12.22

In order to MAKE IT, let’s review the following statement:

We shall not flag or fail. We shall fight in France, we shall fight
in the seas or oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and
growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the
cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the
landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we
shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender. – speaking in the
House of Commons on British resistance to the Nazis, June 1940
— Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) British Politician

Perhaps the world would be different had Winston Churchill not made this speech. The recent movie, The Monument’s Men, showed that by the courage and valor of just a few men, most of the priceless art of Europe was rescued and returned the art to the rightful owners. The will to fight and never surrender is what will help us make it through the day.

Never give up, never give in, You are going to make it!
